Create a Dream Folder
Start clipping pictures from magazines. Visit showrooms and open houses to see products first-hand. Choose features that fit your budget and best express the style you want.

Determine your Priorities
Pay attention to how you actually use your kitchen now. Where do you do the majority of your food prep? Cooking? Clean-up? Make a list of the features you like and dislike. Prioritize into things you can live with and those that must be changed. Include new ideas that you feel you would like to see incorporated into your new plans.

Establish a Budget
Major kitchen remodeling can be at least three times as expensive as simply upgrading appliances and countertops. Decide if your whole layout needs to change. Start contacting professionals in the areas you will need help and gathering pricing information on their products.

Find the Right Designer
When working with a design professional, you should be comfortable that they will design to your tastes and your home. Discuss your priorities to see where you can splurge and where top comprise. Explore several design possibilities to help determine the designer's level of creativity and expertise. Finally, select a designer who is a good listener and has your interests at heart, and then put your trust and confidence in that person.

Cover any furniture that could be exposed to construction dust or seal off area being worked in. Have menus on hand from the local restaurants that offer free delivery for those nights when you need a break from the microwave.
